Time for a new tank?

Signs your oil tank needs replacing.

An old or damaged oil tank can leak, contaminating the ground and water and wasting the oil you’ve paid for. If you notice any of these, it’s worth getting your tank looked at.

Rust or corrosion

Visible rust on a steel tank, or its base and supports, is a sign it’s weakening and could start to leak.

Cracks, splits or bulging

Damage to the outer shell of a plastic tank, including cracks, splits, bulges or whitening, means it’s time for a replacement.

An oil smell

A smell of oil around the tank, stained ground or dead plants nearby can point to a leak from the tank or its pipework.

An older tank

Tanks don’t last forever. A tank that’s around 20 years old or more is worth inspecting, even if it looks sound.

A failed inspection

If an engineer has flagged your tank during a service or inspection, don’t wait for a leak before replacing it.

Water in the oil

Water getting into the tank can cause sludge, blockages and winter breakdowns, and may mean the tank or its lid is failing.

Oil leak

Leaking or damaged oil tank? Act quickly.

Oil leaks can pollute the ground, drains and watercourses, and a spill can be costly to clean up. If you think your tank or its pipework is leaking, act quickly to contain it, then call us to assess the tank and arrange a replacement if it’s needed.

[VERIFY SAFETY COPY WITH AMW — the oil-leak steps and Environment Agency hotline are new copy (not on the live page); copy makes no emergency response-time promise]

Questions

Oil tank installation questions.

Can’t see your question about oil tank installations here? Call the team on 0117 990 2735 or drop us a message.

In most cases, a standard oil tank installation can be completed within a day. If there’s an existing tank to remove or the site needs preparing, such as a new base, it may take slightly longer. We’ll give you a clear timeframe when we carry out your free site survey.

In most cases, domestic oil tanks are covered by permitted development rights and don’t need planning permission, as long as the tank meets certain size and positioning requirements. Listed buildings and some protected areas can be different. We’ll advise you on this during your site survey.

Under Building Regulations Part J guidance, a tank should generally be at least 1.8 metres from any part of a building that isn’t fire-rated, including doors and windows, and at least 760mm from a boundary that isn’t fire-rated. Where that isn’t possible, a fire-rated barrier can sometimes be used. Our team makes sure every installation complies.

Often, yes. A bunded tank has a second outer skin that holds any oil if the inner tank leaks. Whether one is required depends on things like the tank’s capacity and its location, for example how close it is to a drain, watercourse or borehole. Larger and commercial tanks are also covered by the Control of Pollution (Oil Storage) Regulations. We’ll assess this on your survey.

Yes. All of our oil tank installations are carried out by OFTEC registered engineers, meaning the work meets the required safety and quality standards. You’ll also receive the relevant paperwork and certification on completion, which is worth keeping for your home insurance and if you sell the property.

If you’re replacing an existing tank, we handle the full removal, including draining any remaining oil where required. Old tanks are disposed of responsibly in line with environmental guidelines, so you don’t have to worry about a thing.

We check your tank and dip test it and the oil line for water every time we carry out an oil boiler service. If we spot rust, damage or a failing tank, we’ll explain your options, including a replacement.
