LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) boilers give efficient heating and hot water for homes that aren’t connected to the mains gas network. The fuel is stored on site in a tank or cylinders, so an LPG boiler suits rural properties and anywhere the gas main doesn’t reach. LPG is a clean-burning fuel with lower carbon emissions than some other fossil fuels.

Choosing an LPG boiler
An LPG boiler works much like a mains gas boiler, but there are a few extra things to get right. Here’s what we look at before we fit yours.
Boilers are made for a specific fuel. We fit a model built or approved for LPG, set up and tested to burn it safely and efficiently.
LPG boilers come in the same types as mains gas: a combi for hot water on demand, or a system or regular boiler with a hot water cylinder for larger households.
LPG is stored on site in a bulk tank or a set of cylinders, and delivered by your LPG supplier. We check the supply to the boiler can meet its demand.
LPG is heavier than air, so there are extra rules on where LPG appliances can be fitted, especially below ground level. We plan the boiler’s position with that in mind.
Modern LPG boilers are high-efficiency condensing models, getting more heat from every litre of LPG than an older boiler.

LPG boiler replacement
Boilers typically last around 10 to 20 years when properly maintained. When persistent faults emerge and the cost of repairs exceeds the cost of replacement, a new, efficient LPG boiler is usually the more cost-effective choice.

Smell gas? LPG is heavier than air and collects at low level. Don’t use electrical switches or naked flames. Turn off the supply at the tank or cylinder valve if you can, open doors and windows, leave the property and call your LPG supplier’s emergency number, usually shown on the tank or your bill.

By law, an LPG boiler must be installed by a Gas Safe registered engineer who is qualified to work on LPG. You can ask to see your engineer’s Gas Safe ID card, which lists the types of gas work they can carry out. Our engineers are Gas Safe registered for gas and LPG.
They work in much the same way, but LPG burns differently from natural gas, so the boiler has to be built or approved for LPG and set up for it. The other differences are the fuel supply, which comes from a tank or cylinders on your property, and some extra rules on where the boiler can be installed.

We strongly advise an LPG boiler service at least once a year to keep it running safely and efficiently. We also provide boiler servicing for landlords, including the Gas Safety Certificate.
