Vented & unvented hot water cylinders, Bristol

Hot water cylinder installation and servicing, done safely.

Our fully qualified engineers install vented and unvented hot water cylinders throughout Bristol and the surrounding areas, and service them afterwards to keep them safe and efficient.

Vented and unvented cylinders are two different ways of storing and distributing hot water in your home. The right choice depends on your mains water pressure, the space you have and your budget, and our knowledgeable engineers will help you make the right choice for you and your home.

We fit cylinders in a variety of sizes and capacities from leading manufacturers to suit any household, often alongside a new system or regular boiler. Our engineers are G3 qualified, so you can have peace of mind that a pressurised unvented cylinder is installed and serviced safely.

Vented or unvented?

Which hot water cylinder is right for your home?

Both types store hot water heated by your boiler. The difference is where the water pressure comes from, and that changes what suits your home.

Unvented cylinders

Fed straight from the mains, an unvented (pressurised) cylinder gives a continuous flow of hot water at high pressure, with no cold water storage tank in the loft.

Why go unvented

Strong showers from several taps at once, a lower risk of contamination with no loft tank, excellent energy efficiency and safety features built in. Your mains pressure needs to be good enough.

Vented cylinders

A vented cylinder is fed by a cold water tank in the loft, using gravity for pressure. They come in various sizes, from a home for one to a large family.

Why go vented

Built to last, easy to install and low maintenance, with good insulation to keep water hotter for longer. A sensible choice for homes with older pipework.

Unvented safety devices

Because they work under pressure, unvented cylinders have temperature and pressure relief valves and an expansion vessel, which need checking regularly.

Space and set-up

Losing the loft tank can free up space, while a vented cylinder may suit a home that already has one. We’ll look at your pipework and water pressure first.

Replacing your boiler too? A combi needs no cylinder at all, while system and regular boilers do. See our boiler installations or read about what kind of boiler to install.

Unvented cylinder servicing

Is your unvented cylinder due a service?

Unvented cylinders store hot water under high pressure, and their safety devices need to be checked regularly to prevent dangerous situations. Manufacturers generally recommend an annual service, and it is often a condition of the cylinder’s warranty.

Under Building Regulations Part G, an unvented cylinder must be installed by a competent, suitably qualified installer. Our engineers hold the G3 unvented qualification, so they can install and service yours safely.

[VERIFY SAFETY COPY WITH AMW — Part G / G3 wording, the warning signs list and the discharge-pipe safety line are new copy (not on the live page); “annual service per manufacturer” is general guidance]

Call us if you notice:

Very hot water or steam from the discharge pipe? Switch off the boiler or heat source and the immersion heater, keep clear of the pipe, don’t touch or adjust the valves and call a G3 qualified engineer.

Why service your cylinder?

The benefits of an annual cylinder service.

A local Bristol team, based in Patchway, with G3 qualified engineers who look after vented and unvented cylinders as well as the boilers that heat them.

Protect your warranty

Insurance requirements or warranties on your cylinder may make regular servicing a condition of cover or warranty validity.

Lower risk of breakdowns

Servicing catches issues like leaks or corrosion early, which can extend the life of your cylinder and reduce the risk of a serious breakdown.

Keep your home safe

Regular checks of the safety devices lower the chances of a system failure and the possibility of damage to your property.

Efficient performance

A well-maintained cylinder gives a continuous hot water supply with minimal wasted hot water, which helps keep your bills down.

Having a boiler serviced too?

Book your boiler and cylinder in together and the same engineer can look after both in one visit.

A vented cylinder is fed by a cold water storage tank in the loft and relies on gravity for pressure. An unvented cylinder is fed directly from the mains, so it delivers hot water at mains pressure without a loft tank. Unvented cylinders usually give stronger showers and free up loft space, but they need good mains pressure and a G3 qualified installer.

Yes. Building Regulations Part G require unvented hot water systems to be installed by a competent person, which in practice means an installer holding the G3 unvented qualification, and the work must be properly notified. Our engineers are G3 qualified, so they can install, service and repair unvented cylinders safely.

Most manufacturers recommend an annual service, and many make it a condition of the warranty. During a service we check the pressure and temperature relief valves, the expansion vessel charge, the pressure reducing valve and the discharge pipework, so the safety devices will work if they’re ever needed.

It depends on your mains water pressure and flow rate, the space you have and your budget. Unvented cylinders suit homes with good mains pressure and more than one bathroom. If your pressure is low or your pipework is older, a vented cylinder may be the better option. We’ll test and advise before recommending anything.

No. A combi boiler heats water on demand, so there’s no cylinder or loft tank. If you have high hot water demand, though, a system boiler with an unvented cylinder can be the better choice. Our boiler installations team can help you compare.
