LPG around Bristol
Bristol itself is almost entirely on mains gas, but the countryside around it isn’t. In some villages and outlying homes across South Gloucestershire, North Somerset and the Bath fringe, LP gas (in homes, usually propane) is how households get gas central heating, supplied from a tank in the garden or a set of cylinders by the house.
We fit LPG boilers for two kinds of customer: homes that already run on LPG and need a new boiler, and homes switching to LPG from oil or electric heating. For the differences between combi, system and regular LPG boilers, head to our main LPG boilers page.
LPG boilers, Bristol fringe
An LPG installation is part boiler, part supply. Here’s what we look at for homes around Bristol.
Moving from oil to LPG means a new boiler built for LPG, a new gas supply pipe from the tank, and a decision about the old oil tank. We plan the boiler side and tell you what needs arranging with the LPG supplier.
A bulk tank suits most homes that use LPG for heating and hot water. Smaller homes, or those using less gas, sometimes run on a bank of cylinders instead. We check the supply can keep up with the boiler you choose.
LPG tanks are usually supplied, sited and filled by the LPG company, which has its own rules on where a tank can go. We coordinate with them so the tank, the pipework and the boiler all line up.
LPG is heavier than air, so there are extra rules about fitting LPG appliances below ground level, in cellars or basements. That matters in some older cottages, and we check it at the survey.
If your LPG boiler is old or unreliable, a modern condensing model can make better use of each delivery. We’ll tell you honestly if a repair makes more sense.
Landlords with LPG-heated cottages and lets need an annual gas safety check, just as with mains gas. We can fit the boiler and carry out the gas safety check afterwards.

LPG boiler problems
Before you book a replacement, check the simple things. If the boiler still won’t fire, call us and we’ll tell you whether it’s worth repairing or time for a new one.
Once it’s fitted, an annual LPG boiler service keeps it running safely and efficiently.

Smell gas? LPG is heavier than air and collects at low level. Don’t use electrical switches or naked flames. Turn off the supply at the tank or cylinder valve if you can, open doors and windows, leave the property and call your LPG supplier’s emergency number, usually shown on the tank or your bill.

Inside the city, hardly at all, because almost every street has mains gas. On the rural fringe it’s a different story: some villages and isolated homes in South Gloucestershire, North Somerset and around Bath have no gas main, and LPG is one of the usual choices there alongside oil.
Yes. You’ll need a boiler built for LPG, a supply from an LPG tank or cylinders, and new pipework to the boiler. The LPG supplier normally provides and sites the tank, and the old oil tank will need to be emptied and removed or made safe. We handle the boiler side and help you plan the rest. If you’d rather stay on oil, see oil boiler installations around Bristol.
Most homes heating with LPG use a bulk tank, because a boiler uses a lot of gas over a winter. Cylinders can work for smaller homes or lower use, usually with an automatic changeover valve so the supply switches over when one runs out. We’ll help you work out which suits your home.
Usually the LPG supplier. They supply the tank, decide where it can safely go under their rules and fill it. Our job is the boiler and the pipework from the tank to it, and we can liaise with the supplier to keep things moving.
There are extra restrictions on fitting LPG appliances below ground level, because escaped LPG sinks and can collect. Some older cottages around Bristol have boilers in cellars, so we check this at the survey and suggest a different position if needed.
A like-for-like LPG boiler replacement is usually done in a day. A switch from oil takes longer because of the new supply and pipework, and some of the timing depends on when the supplier can install the tank.

Off-grid homes near Bristol
The villages around the city are where LPG comes into its own, from the Severn shore to the Cotswold edge and the hills south of the city.
Along the Severn, around Aust and Littleton-upon-Severn, some homes sit a long way from any gas main. Up on the Cotswold edge towards Tormarton and Hawkesbury Upton, and in the hamlets around Dyrham and Cold Ashton, stone houses and farm conversions are often heated by oil or LPG.
South of the city, in the villages between the Chew Valley and the Bath road, the pattern repeats. Where a home has no gas main, we can talk through whether LPG or oil is the better fit before quoting.
