Gas boilers in Bristol homes
Almost every street in Bristol is on the mains gas network, so a gas boiler is still the way most households in the city heat their homes. What changes from one home to the next is the building around it: a narrow Victorian terrace in Bedminster, a converted Georgian flat in Clifton and a 1990s semi in Bradley Stoke each bring their own questions about where the boiler sits, where the flue goes and how the hot water is delivered.
That’s what our survey is for. Our Gas Safe registered engineers look at the flue route, the gas supply, the condensate run and the water pressure before recommending anything, so the boiler we fit suits your home rather than just replacing like for like. If you want to compare combi, system and regular boilers first, our main gas boilers page explains each type.
Gas boilers, Bristol
Most of the work in a city installation happens before the boiler comes off the van. These are the things we look at most often in Bristol properties.
In flats and maisonettes the flue often can’t go straight out of the nearest wall. We plan a compliant route, which might mean a vertical flue, a plume kit to steer vapour away from windows, or moving the boiler. Flues running through ceiling voids need access for inspection, and we check for that too.
Terraces in areas like Southville, Totterdown and Bishopston often have the boiler at the back of the kitchen or tucked into a loft. We look at whether it’s worth moving, and how pipework can run without lifting half the floorboards.
A combi saves space in a flat or small terrace, but it depends on good mains water flow, which can be weak on older supply pipes. For a bigger house with two bathrooms, a system boiler and hot water cylinder often works better. We test your flow rate before we recommend one.
Plenty of Bristol homes still have a regular boiler, a cylinder and a cold water tank in the loft. Switching to a combi can free up that space, which is handy if you’re planning a loft conversion.
Modern gas boilers produce condensate that has to drain away. Where the pipe runs outside, we route and size it to reduce the risk of it freezing in a cold snap.
With so many rented homes and shared houses around the universities and the city centre, we fit boilers for landlords too, and can take care of the annual gas safety check afterwards.

Why AMW
We’re based in Patchway on the north edge of the city, so Bristol homes are our everyday work.
A Bristol business, so the people who fit your boiler are the same people you call about it later.
We’ll say if a cheaper combi suits you better than a bigger system boiler, or if your current one still has life in it.
Flats, cupboards and narrow terraces don’t leave much room, so we protect floors and keep the work area tidy.

Questions

Yes. Flats are some of the jobs we plan most carefully, because the flue has to reach outside safely and meet the rules on clearances from windows, doors and neighbouring properties. At the survey we check the options, which can include a vertical flue through the roof, a plume kit or a new boiler position. If you live in a leasehold flat, it’s worth checking whether you need the freeholder’s permission for a new flue.
Often, yes, especially if you have one bathroom and want to free up space from an old cylinder and loft tank. The one thing to check is your mains water flow, because a combi can only deliver as much hot water as the supply allows, and some older Bristol streets have narrow supply pipes. We measure it at the survey before recommending anything.
Usually. Common moves in Bristol homes are into a loft, a utility room or a cupboard, and sometimes the other way, out of a loft that’s being converted. Moving a boiler means new gas, water and condensate pipework and a new flue position, so it adds time and cost, and we include all of it in your quote.
Yes. Several parts of Bristol, including much of Clifton and Montpelier, are conservation areas, and some homes are listed. A like-for-like boiler swap is rarely an issue, but a new flue on a front elevation or a listed building may need extra thought or consent, so we’ll flag anything like that at the survey and suggest discreet routes where we can.
All of it, from the city centre and Harbourside out to Filton, Bradley Stoke, Kingswood and Hengrove, plus the surrounding towns. We’re based in Patchway, BS34. If your home isn’t on mains gas, we also fit oil and LPG boilers around Bristol.
A straight swap in the same position is usually done in a day. Moving the boiler, changing from a regular system to a combi or rerouting a flue in a flat can add another day, and we’ll tell you before your installation date.
Yes. We replace boilers in rented homes and HMOs across the city and can carry out the annual gas safety check and CP12 afterwards. See boiler servicing for landlords.

Gas boilers across Bristol
Our base in Patchway puts the whole city within easy reach, from the northern suburbs to south Bristol.
Bristol’s housing is a patchwork. Clifton and Kingsdown have Georgian and Regency houses, many now split into flats. Southville, Bedminster, Totterdown, Easton and Bishopston are lined with Victorian and Edwardian terraces. Further out, places like Filton, Horfield and Fishponds have interwar semis, and the north fringe around Bradley Stoke is mostly newer estates. Each has its own typical boiler position and flue problem.
Newer flats around the Harbourside and Temple Quarter bring different questions again, such as communal flues, limited outside walls and tight cupboards. Whatever the building, we check what’s possible at the survey and quote for it clearly.
